2016 Proposal
with Yitong Yao
30,000 m2
This project pretends to recreate inside the selected site, a microcosm of the city’s current condition. It inserts four players inside a rectangular form gameboard, where each player would start from each corner.
We think of Mexico City as an archipelago of islands. One which is organized through an old, complex - and not so discrete - spatial distribution of economies and population. The road network linking all the islands together also follows the same structure.
With time, each island grabbed a role in the national economy game board. This has a direct effect on each island’s population size and geographical space. It also shows a landscape of economic, social and spatial disparity. Yet, when the conditions allow it, they also create mutations that some of the times replicate and survive inside the archipelago.
The idea here is that this battlefield would bring its players into unexpected close proximity. By intensifying their interaction, they would generate conditions which would accelerate the birth of mutations inside the archipelago. This mutation pretends to create contemporary forms to inhabit the chaotic metropolis.
